Five Ways Your Family Can Participate in Earth Week
You and your family can celebrate Earth Week by getting out and enjoying nature at a local park, learning to incorporate more sustainable practices in your everyday lives, or by participating in local events meant to clean and revitalize our community’s green spaces.
During Earth Week, April 20th through April 27th, many local nature centers and community organizations offer opportunities to celebrate by hosting nature-focused events and cleanup initiatives. Here are five ways you and your family can participate, while also doing your part to keep our waterways and green spaces clean:
29th Annual Riverkeeper Spring Cleanup
On Saturday, April 20th you and your family can participate in a community-wide effort across 90 locations along the Milwaukee River basin in Ozaukee, Waukesha, and Washington Counties, to remove over 100,000 pounds of trash from our river system. You bring the energy and hard work, and the Milwaukee Riverkeepers will provide gloves, trash bags, and a free t-shirt. Pre-registration is required. Learn more and register here.
Earth Day Workshop - Discovery World
On Saturday, April 20th head to Discovery World to celebrate Earth Week and learn ways to keep our planet clean. Attendees can participate in a “Plant it On” activity where you’ll craft seed paper from recycled paper and pollinator-friendly wildflower seeds. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Purchase tickets online in advance here.
Friends of Retzer Nature Center’s Earth Week Celebration
The Retzer Nature Center is hosting a variety of activities during Earth Week. Participate in a canoe ride, bird watch activity, tree and wildflower hike, a magical mystery tour, and more. The Earth Week Celebration Event will educate families on sustainability and recycling. On Saturday, April 20th you can participate in a volunteer clean-up in Waukesha area parks. Check out a full list of activities here.
Schlitz Audubon: Earth Day Beach Clean Up
Celebrate Earth Week by cleaning up the shores of Lake Michigan. Not only will you improve the health of Lake Michigan directly, but you will also contribute to the Adopt-A-Beach program by collecting data as a citizen scientist. Register in advance here.
Earth Week Events With Urban Ecology Center
The Urban Ecology Center is providing many ways to participate in Earth Week. Participate in a clothing swap, help remove invasive species from our parks, plant seedlings, spruce up painted stools in the parks, and more. See a list of events here.
