Arts and Crafts With Teacher Toni - Homemade Giant Bubbles
In this edition of Arts and Crafts With Teacher Toni, we learn how to make homemade giant bubbles. This is a simple project you can do at home that’s fun and gets your kids outdoors!
Project - Homemade Giant Bubbles
Materials Needed - 6 cups distilled water, 1/2 cup of blue Dawn dish detergent or similar, 1/2 cup cornstarch, 1 tbsp baking powder, 1 tbsp glycerine, 2 straws, string
Instructions - Mix water and cornstarch in a large dish or pot. Stir until cornstarch is dissolved. Next add detergent, baking powder and glycerine. Stir lightly. Be careful not to overstir to the point where you create a lot of froth. Allow the mix to sit for at least an hour before using. Stir occasionally if cornstarch begins to settle on the bottom of your dish or pot.
While the mix is sitting, you can begin to create your bubble wand. You’ll need your two straws and string. Take the string and run it through the middle of each straw and then tie the ends of the string together. The string should be one circle with the straws serving as handles on each side of the circle.
Once the mix has set at least an hour, pour it into a larger flat container. You’ll want something large enough so that you can submerge your wand in the mix. We used a large baking pan with raised edges. Once you’ve submerged the wand, slowly begin to spread the two straws apart and gently pull against the wind so that a bubble begins to form and eventually releases from the wand. It may take some getting use to, but with a little practice you’ll be creating large bubbles in no time!
